Coolderry (Offaly) and Loughgiel Shamrocks (Antrim) are through to the AIB GAA Hurling All-Ireland Senior Club Championship Final on St. Patrick’s Day and now it’s the turn of the footballers to set up the final pairings when they clash in the semi-finals next Saturday.

The pairings are as follows:
Crossmaglen Rangers (Armagh) v Dr. Crokes (Kerry), Portlaoise, (2.00)
Garrycastle (Westmeath) v St. Brigid’s (Roscommon), Glennon Brothers Pearse Park, Longford (2.00).

Both semi-finals promise to be intriguing affairs, involving the reigning All-Ireland champions (Crossmaglen), a Kerry club (Dr.Crokes) chasing a second All-Ireland title and a first for 20 years, All-Ireland semi-final newcomers (Garrycastle) and a Roscommon side (St.Brigid’s) hoping to reach the final for a second successive year.

CROSSMAGLEN RANGERS v DR.CROKES

Crossmaglen Rangers, the defending All-Ireland champions, are bidding to reach the AIB GAA Football All-Ireland Senior Club Championship Final for the seventh time, a truly remarkable record, given that their first appearance in the final was in 1997. They also qualified in 1999-2000-2007-2009 and last year. They won five All-Ireland titles in 1997-1999-2000-2007-2011.

Dr. Crokes will be attempting to reach the All-Ireland final for the third time, having previously been in there in 1992, when they won their only title to date, and in 2007 when they lost a replay to Crossmaglen.

The sides drew 1-9 each in Croke Park on St.Patrick’s Day before Crossmaglen won the replay (0-13 to 1-5) in Portlaoise two weeks later.

Crossmaglen retained the Ulster title most impressively last autumn, comfortably beating St.Gall’s of Antrim, the 2010 All-Ireland winners, Ballinderry (Derry) and Burren (Down).

Dr. Crokes were equally impressive in their three wins in Munster against Ballinacourty (Waterford), Kilmurry-Ibrickane(Clare) and UCC.

One interesting similarity in both Dr.Crokes’ and Crossmaglen’s advance to the semi-final has been their high scoring returns. They have averaged 2 goals 12.5 points, which suggests that Saturday’s clash will provide lots of scoring opportunities.

That’s hardly surprising, given the producing nature of the respective strike forces. Oisin McConville (2-5), Aaron Kernan (0-11), Jamie Clarke (1-3), Aaron Cunningham (1-3), Stephen Kernan (0-5), Tony Kernan (0-4) have been in fine finishing form for Crossmaglen while Colm Cooper (2-11), Daithi Casey (2-10) and Kieran O’Leary (1-4) have been Dr. Crokes’ top marksmen.

How they reached the semi-final

Dr.Crokes 3-13 Ballinacourty (Waterford) 0-7 (Munster quarter-final)
Dr. Crokes 0-12 Kilmurry-Ibrickane (Clare) 0-9 (Munster semi-final)
Dr. Crokes 3-14 UCC 2-10 (Munster final)
Average For: 2-13 Average Against: 0-11

Crossmaglen Rangers 3-9 St.Gall’s (Antrim) 2-5 (Ulster quarter-final)
Crossmaglen Rangers 0-17 Ballinderry (Derry) 1-10 (Ulster semi-final)
Crossmaglen Rangers 2-11 Burren (Down) 0-10 (Ulster final)

Average For: 2-12 Average Against 1-9

Previous All-Ireland semi-final appearances

2007: Dr. Crokes 2-9 Moorefield 0-8 (Replay)
Played 4, Won 2, Drew 1, Lost 1.

GARRYCASTLE v ST.BRIGID’S

A fascinating clash between neighbouring clubs, separated by the river Shannon, as St. Brigid’s fly the Roscommon and Connacht flags while Garrycastle carry the Westmeath and Leinster banners.

It’s a real family affair as brothers, Frankie, Darren and Garvan Dolan (St.Brigid’s) will be in opposition to their cousins, Dessie and Gary Dolan (who are brothers), James Dolan and Alan Fox.

Adding to the intrigue is the presence of Anthony Cunningham as Garrycastle manager. The current Galway senior hurling boss managed St.Brigid’s for a few years, including when they made their first appearance in the All-Ireland semi-final in 2007 (they lost to Crossmaglen Rangers).

St.Brigid’s are attempting to reach the final for a second successive year (they lost to Crossmaglen last spring) after retaining the Connacht title with a dramatic one point win over Corofin of Galway in the final. They had earlier beaten Tourlestrane (Sligo) by six points in the semi-final.

St.Brigid’s went on to beat London champions Fulham Irish by eight points in the All-Ireland quarter-final. With Roscommon star, Peter Domican a key figure in defence and Karol Mannion anchoring midfield, St. Brigid’s are well set up to provide a lively attack with lots of opportunities. Frankie Dolan (0-14) and Senan Kilbride (0-12) have been their main finishers.

The strength of the defence is underlined by their low giveaway rate as they have yet to concede a goal in this campaign.

Garrycastle, who will be appearing the All-Ireland semi-final for the first time, have a secure defence too, having conceded 1-6, 1-6, 0-10 against Longford Slashers, Athy and St. Brigid’s (Dublin) respectively. Dessie Dolan has scored a total of 0-12, his brother, Gary has scored 2-1 while their cousin, James has landed 2-3.

How they reached the semi-final

Garrycastle 4-11 Longford Slashers (Longford) 1-6 (Leinster quarter-final)
Garrycastle 1-10 Athy (Kildare) 1-6 (Leinster semi-final)
Garrycastle 1-8 St.Brigid’s (Dublin) 0-10 (Leinster final)
Average For: 2-10; Average Against: 0-10

St. Brigid’s 0-16 Tourlestrane (Sligo) 0-10 (Connacht semi-final)
St. Brigid’s 0-11 Corofin (Galway) 0-10 (Connacht final)
St. Brigid’s (Roscommon) 1-12 Fulham Irish (London) 0-7

Average For: 0-14 Average Against: 0-9

Previous All-Ireland semi-finals

St. Brigid’s
2007: Crossmaglen Rangers (Armagh) 1-11 St. Brigid’s 0-11
2011: St. Brigid’s 0-13 Nemo Rangers (Cork) 0-8
Garrycastle are in their first All-Ireland semi-final.

COOLDERRY CLINCH FIRST ALL-IRELAND FINAL TILT

Offaly champions, Coolderry are through to the AIB GAA All-Ireland club senior hurling final for the first time after beating Gort (Galway) by 3-16 to 0-17 in the semi-final and will meet Loughgiel Shamrocks, who are back in the final for the first time since 1983 when they became the first and – so far – only Ulster side to win the title.

Loughgiel beat Na Piarsaigh (Limerick) by 0-27 to 2-13 (after extra-time) in the other semi-final in a game where Liam Watson scored 0-16 for the winners. Damien Murray scored 1-8 for Coolderry who will be attempting to become the second Offaly club to win the All-Ireland title on St.Patrick’s Day.

Birr won four titles in 1995-98-2002-2003.

MOUNT LEINSTER MAKE CARLOW HISTORY

Mount Leinster Rangers created history by becoming the first Carlow club to win an All-Ireland title when they beat Middletown Na Fianna (Armagh) by two points in the intermediate hurling final in Croke Park last Saturday. There was glory too for St. Patrick’s (Kilkenny), who won the junior hurling decider, Clonbur of Galway (junior football) and Milltown-Castlemaine of Kerry (intermediate football).

We all know the catch line for playing the Lotto which is the teaser that ‘It could be you’. Well, GAA people will be left thinking the very same when they look upon the action at Croke Park this weekend.

Over Saturday and Sunday the AIB GAA All-Ireland club finals at junior and intermediate in football and hurling will take place on the hallowed surface of Croke Park.

Of the 2,600 clubs registered in the GAA in Ireland, every one of us can relate to a club story that will bid for history this weekend.

Whether it’s unique first timers like Middletown from Armagh and Mount Leinster Rangers of Carlow in hurling, or Naomh Padraig Clonbur from Galway who have been so stretched for resources they haven’t had enough players for minor or U21 teams in several years – the sight of them on the threshold of All-Ireland glory is truly inspirational.

We can say the same of Charleville and St Patrick’s Ballyragget who have ended long famines to get here. Derrytresk are here after winning their first county title in 108 years. Davitts and Milltown-Castlemaine have brought their communities to a standstill by their exploits.

No one reinvented the wheel. Through them all is the common story of a band of sporting brothers who made a solemn oath to each other that this year would be different.

Yeah skill plays a significant part – and luck does too. But at the heart of it all is a yearning desire for perspiration to be their inspiration. What club can’t relate to that?

Kieran McGeeney likes to utter the phrase that ‘the harder I work the luckier I get’ and it sums up most if not all of the eight teams in the finals this weekend.

At senior level this weekend then you have the remarkable story of Gort and Coolderry toppling heavyweight giants and emerging as stars in their own right.

Meanwhile Na Piarsaigh of Limerick are first time county winners now first time provincial winners and 60 minutes away from St Patrick’s Day.

Once upon a time, 1983 in fact, Loughgiel Shamrocks were AIB All-Ireland club champions. But of more relevance id the fact that their current team suffered the heartache of losing six straight Antrim senior finals and then a semi-final before winning the county crown in 2010 and retaining it in 2011.

There’s a nugget of motivation in every story.

Far from it being ‘it could be you’ the AIB GAA Club Championships should look at this weekend’s action and ask ‘Why Couldn’t it be You?’

As for what it means to the teams in the finals this weekend, we’ll let them explain in their own words.

“I’m 30 and coming towards the end rather than start of my career but it’s great. I never thought I’d get to play in Croke Park. A few of us at underage were on Kilkenny minor panels but a huge amount of us would never have thought we’d get here and thankfully we have our chance now.” – Ciaran Delaney, captain St Pat’s, Ballyragget.

“It’s a great occasion and a lot of us might never play in Croke Park again. It’s great to play with your club here and that’s the benefit of the AIB championship. We won our first county championship since the 60s this year and had a few rough years. We won a few divisional titles alright but this year has been a rollercoaster and if we finish up with the trophy the town will be on a high. It would be incredible to win a trophy and stand up there in the Hogan Stand with the trophy and with your friends. You watch fellas on TV do it and it would be an experience you’d never forget. You can’t look forward too much because you’d forget you’ve to play a match – but yeah it’d be good.” – Danny Flynn, Charleville captain.

“There are lads in our club who would never even think of going to Croke Park to even see Mayo and the fact the club is in it they’ll be up there. They live and die for the club and it is a great initiative.” – Michael Conroy, captain, Davitts GFC.

“We got fantastic support on the way to the final – people who hadn’t been at a game for 10 or 15 years turned up so it is fantastic for the area and gave the whole place a lift.” Karl Lawler, captain Mount Leinster Rangers.

“It’s a great competition and fair play to the GAA and to a Kerry president Sean Kelly who brought it in and the AIB for being behind it. There are guys going to come up and support us who have never been to a football match before. That’s the best thing about the competition – it is bringing more people into the area and more people into the community people getting to know each other. With an urban sprawl there are a lot of new people in communities who don’t know what is going on around them and competitions like this really bring it alive and get people to know each other better.” – Captain of Milltown-Castlemaine Damian Murphy.

Gort will take on Coolderry, Offaly, in the AIB GAA Hurling Senior Championship Semi Final on Saturday 11th February at the Gaelic Grounds, Limerick. AIB GAA Hurling All-Ireland Senior Club Championship Semi Final Press Conference, Gort, Co.Galway.

Three of the four semi-finalists in the AIB GAA All-Ireland senior hurling club championships have never won the title before, which greatly increases the chances of new champions being crowned in Croke Park on St. Patrick’s Day.

The exception is Loughgiel Shamrocks (Antrim), who won the title in 1983. Now, they are back in the semi-final where they play Na Piarsaigh (Limerick) in Parnell Park, Dublin next Saturday (2.0) while, on the same afternoon, Gort (Galway) take on Coolderry (Offaly) in the Limerick Gaelic Grounds (2.0) in the other semi-final.

COOLDERRY v GORT

Coolderry are seeking a first appearance in the All-Ireland final, having won the Leinster title for the first time last November when they beat Oulart-The Ballagh (Wexford) in the final.

Gort are also chasing their first All-Ireland title but have reached the final before. In 1984, they beat Midleton (Cork) by 1-11 to 2-4 in the semi-final before drawing with Ballyhale Shamrocks (Kilkenny) in the final (1-10 each). However, they lost the replay by 1-10 to 0-7. Gort also reached the 1981 All-Ireland semi-final where they lost to James Stephens (Kilkenny) by five points.

Several fathers of current players were on the Gort teams of the 1980’s, as was current manager, Mattie Murphy. He crowned a great year by steering Gort to their first Galway title since 1983 last November, having led Galway minors to All-Ireland glory two month earlier.

Gort underlined their pedigree by beating Clarinbridge, the reigning All-Ireland champions, in the Galway county final. Captained by Andy Coen, they won by 0-17 to 1-12 in a game where Gerry Quinn scored 0-7 and Aidan Harte 0-5 for the winners. Harte was aboard the Galway senior squad last year. As Galway champions, Gort were automatically crowned Connacht champions.

Having dethroned Clarinbridge, Gort will fancy their chances of reaching the final as part of their wider ambition to become the 7th Galway club to win the All-Ireland, following in the illustrious footsteps of Castlegar (1980), Kiltormer (1992), Sarsfields (1993-94), Athenry (1997-2000-2001), Portumna (2006-2008-2009), Clarinbridge (2011).

Coolderry are attempting to become the second Offaly club to win the All-Ireland title (Birr won in 1995-98-2002-2003). Coached by former Tipperary star, Ken Hogan, Coolderry made an impressive advance through Leinster, beating highly rated Ballyboden St.Enda’s (Dublin) and Oulart-The-Ballagh (Wexford).

They beat Ballyboden by 1-18 to 0-15, with Damien Murray scoring 0-8, Cathal Parlon 0-6 and Eoin Ryan 0-4 while the goal came from Barry Teehan.

Parlon (1-3) and Murray (0-6) were again hugely prominent in the Leinster final, as was Brian Carroll who scored 0-3. It was an excellent all-round performance by Coolderry, for whom Joe Brady was outstanding at centre-back as Coolderry won by four points.

How they reached the semi-final

Coolderry 1-18 Ballyboden-St.Enda’s (Dublin) 0-15 (Leinster semi-final)
Coolderry 1-15 Oulart-The Ballagh (Wexford) 1-11 (Leinster final)
Gort qualified automatically for the All-Ireland semi-final as Galway champions.

LOUGHGIEL SHAMROCKS v NA PIARSAIGH

A first appearance in the All-Ireland semi-final for Na Piarsaigh while Loughgiel are in their sixth semi-finals having lost in 1971-72-1990-2011 and won in 1983, the year they went on to become the first – and so far only – Ulster club to win the hurling title.

Loughgiel are back in the semi-final for a second successive season, having lost to O’Loughlin Gaels (Kilkenny) last year. However, they regained momentum in the Antrim championship, powering to another title before beating Kevin Lynch’s (Derry) and Ballycran (Down) in the Ulster campaign. They were easy winners on both occasions, winning by 16 points. Interestingly, they scored 2-18 in both games.

Liam Watson scored 1-7, Bennie McCarry 1-3 and Declan Laverty 0-3 for Loughgiel against Kevin’s Lynch’s while Eddie McCloskey (1-2) and Brendan McCarry (1-1) were top scorers in the final against Ballycran.

Now, Loughgiel are up against the highly ambitious Na Piarsaigh, who enjoyed their best ever year in 2011, winning the Limerick and Munster titles for the first time. They are now hoping to become the first Limerick club to reach the All-Ireland final since Kilmallock in 1993. No Limerick club has ever won the All-Ireland senior club title so there’s a massive incentive for Na Piarsaigh.

Managed by former Clare star, Sean Stack, they saw off a highly-rated Ballygunner (Waterford) side in the Munster semi-final (3-9 to 0-12) in a game where teenage star, Shane Dowling scored 1-4 while Kevin Downes and David Breen landed a goal each.

Crusheen (Clare) were Na Piarsaigh’s opponents in the Munster final, where it took two games to separate them. Crusheen led by 0-11 to 1-4 early in the second half of the drawn game but, inspired by Dowling, who scored a total of 1-7, the Limerick champions clawed their way back.

Crusheen led by three points midway through the second half of the replay but, once again, Na Piarsaigh finished very strongly and eventually ran out comfortable seven-point winners, 1-13 to 0-9. This time, it was another teenager, Adrian Breen (19) who took the scoring honours for Na Piarsaigh, notching 1-3 while Shane Dowling landed 0-3.

Captained by Kieran Bermingham, it was a special day for Na Piarsaigh as they brought the Munster crown back to Limerick for the first time in 17 years (Kilmallock won in 1994 but lost the 1995 All-Ireland semi-final to Birr).

How they reached the All-Ireland semi-finals

Loughgiel 2-18 Kevin Lynch’s (Derry) 1-5 (Ulster semi-final)
Loughgiel 2-18 Ballycran 0-8 (Down) (Ulster final)

Na Piarsaigh 3-9 Ballygunner (Waterford) 0-12 (Munster quarter-final)
Na Piarsaigh 1-11 Crusheen (Clare) 0-14 (Munster final)
Na Piarsaigh 1-13 Crusheen 0-9 (Replay)

It’s the biggest weekend of the year on the junior and intermediate club circuit as Croke Park hosts the AIB GAA All-Ireland hurling and football finals next Saturday and Sunday.

Eight counties, featuring two each from the four provinces (Mayo, Galway, Armagh, Tyrone, Cork, Kerry, Carlow, Kilkenny) will be represented, giving it the broadest possible spread for what should be two great occasions on Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon.

The full programme is as follows:

AIB GAA All-Ireland club championship finals

Saturday: Junior Hurling: Charleville (Cork) v St.Patrick’s (Kilkenny), Croke Park 5.30; Intermediate Hurling: Middletown Na Fianna (Armagh) v Mount Leinster Rangers (Carlow), Croke Park, 7.15.
Sunday: Junior Football: Derrytresk (Tyrone) v Naomh Padraig, Clonbur (Galway), Croke Park, 2.0; Intermediate Football: Davitts (Mayo) v Milltown-Castlemaine (Kerry), Croke Park, 3.45.

Intermediate Football: Davitts (Mayo) v Milltown-Castlemaine (Kerry)

Kerry’s third title or Mayo’s first? The answer will emerge on Sunday when Milltown-Castlemaine attempt to become the third Kerry club (St.Michael’s Foilmore in 2009, Ardfert 2007) to win the All-Ireland intermediate football title while Davitts are bidding to become the first Mayo club to land the big prize.

Davitts, the Mayo and Connacht champions, have yet to concede a goal in the three games which took them to the All-Ireland final, underlining how secure their defence is. They proved it yet again in the All-Ireland semi-finals when restricting Eire Og, Greystones (Wicklow) to just six points while scoring an impressive 2-12. Once again, Michael Conroy was their top scorer, kicking 0-8 to add to 1-14 he scored in Connacht (1-7 v Melvin Gaels and 0-7 v Padraig Pearses).

Goals by Fergal McGrath and David McDonagh further decorated Davitts’ All-Ireland semi-final performance as they became the first Mayo club to reach the intermediate final.

Ballindine-based Davitts are managed by Tuam’s Pete Warren, a selector with John O’Mahony during Galway’s All-Ireland winning years in 1998 and 2001. Interestingly, Stephen Joyce, a fellow-selector with O’Mahony and Warren, is in charge of Clonbur (Galway) who play Derrytresk in the All-Ireland junior final ahead of the intermediate decider.

Milltown-Castlemaine brought the Munster title back to Kerry for a 6th successive year with wins over Clondegad, Newmarket and Mullinahone before clinching an All-Ireland final place with a one point win (1-7 to 1-6) over Craigbane (Derry) in the semi-final. It was quite an achievement by the Kerry champions who were four points adrift of Craigbane entering the final quarter before a goal from Shane Murphy brought them right back in contention and they edged to victory on the run-in.

They had a close call in their first outing when it took a late goal from 19 year-old Cathal Moriarty to see of Clondegad of Clare in the Munster quarter-final before Milltown-Castlemaine had three points to spare against Newmarket in the semi-final. Former Kerry players, Ian Twiss scored 0-4 for the Kerry champions while Jerome Flynn notched the crucial goal on a day when Mick Burke was outstanding at midfield for the winners.

Tipperary champions, Mullinahone provided the opposition in the Munster final but were easily beaten by a rampant Milltown-Castlemaine. Twiss scored 0-5 while Flynn added 1-2 as the Kerrymen powered to a 1-14 to 0-6 win.

How they reached the final

Davitts 1-12 Melvin Gaels (Leitrim) 0-12 (Connacht semi-final)
Davitts 1-13 Padraig Pearses (Roscommon) 0-8 (Connacht final)
Davitts 2-12 Eire Og (Wicklow) 0-6 (All-Ireland semi-final

Milltown-Castlemaine 2-5 Clondegad (Clare) 0-10 (Munster quarter-final)
Milltown-Castlemaine 1-9 Newmarket (Cork) 1-6 (Munster semi-final)
Milltown-Castlemaine 1-14 Mullinahone (Tipperary) 0-6 (Munster final)
Milltown-Castlemaine (Kerry) 1-7 Craigbane (Derry) 1-6 (All-Ireland semi-final)

Junior Football: Derrytresk (Tyrone) v Naomh Padraig, Clonbur (Galway)

Derrytresk are bidding to become the second Tyrone club to win the All-Ireland junior title (St.Patrick’s were successful in 2007) while Naomh Padraig, Clonbur are seeking to become Galway’s first junior winners.

Clonbur, managed by former Galway star, Stephen Joyce, were easy winners over Ballivor (Meath) in the All-Ireland semi-final, powering to a 3-4 to 0-3 win. Goals by Brian Keane, Walter Holleran and Eamonn O Cuiv gave the Galwaymen an unexpectedly easy victory, having earlier beaten Creggs (Roscommon) and Islandeady (Mayo) in the Connacht championship

They were level with Islandeady with four minutes remaining but points by Eoin Joyce and Pat Lambe gave the Galwaymen victory. Eoin Joyce, a son of former Galway senior star, Stephen Joyce scored 0-7 (0-3 frees) for impressive Clonbur. He added a further three points against Ballivor.

Derrytresk draw from a small base but haven’t let it impede their ambitions in any way. They had six points to spare over Dromid Pearses (Kerry) in the semi-final (1-10 to 0-7) on a day when Niall Gavin (0-6) and Joseph McKee (1-1) were top scorers for the Ulster champions.

Derrytresk, jointly managed by Paul Hughes and Paul Canavan, earlier powered their way to easy wins over the Derry and Armagh champions in the first two rounds of the Ulster championship, beating Doire Trasna by 12 points and Eire Og by 15 points before facing a much tougher challenge against a strong Cremartin (Monaghan) side in the final.

It was all square at half-time before Cremartin led by two points after 50 minutes but a crucial goal from veteran, Michael Rea (Caolan Corr had scored their first in the opening half) helped Derrytresk to the narrowest of victories.

How they reached the final

Clonbur 2-11 Creggs (Roscommon) 1-4 (Connacht semi-final)

Clonbur 0-11 Islandeady (Mayo) 0-9 (Connacht final)
Clonbur 3-4 Ballivor (Meath) 0-3 (All-Ireland semi-final)

Derrytresk (Tyrone) 2-11 Doire Trasna (Derry) 0-6 (Ulster quarter-final)
Derrytresk 2-12 Eire Og (Armagh) 0-3 (Ulster semi-final)
Derrytresk 2-5 Cremartin (Monaghan) 0-10 (Ulster final)
Derrytresk 1-10 Dromid Pearses (Kerry) 0-7 (All-Ireland semi-final)

Intermediate Hurling: Mount Leinster Rangers (Carlow) V Middletown Na Fianna (Armagh)

Nobody would have predicted a final between Armagh and Carlow clubs at the start of the championship but Mount Leinster Rangers and Middletown ran superb campaigns to set up a very interesting final.

Middletown scored a total of 13-63 in their four-game march to the final, including a very impressive 3-14 against a highly-rated Effin (Limerick) team in the All-Ireland semi-final. Middletown raced into an early seven point lead with a goal from Cathal Carville settling them into an impressive flow. Middletown led by six points at half-time and goals by David Moan and Conor McCann strengthened their grip early in the second half and they withstood a late rally from Effin to clinch a place in the final.

Earlier, Middletown scored a total of 10-49 in their wins over Carrickmore, Lamh Dhearg and Castleblayney in Ulster. Their closest call was in the Ulster semi-final where they were run to five points by Lamh Dhearg but it was very much different in the final where they had a whopping 27 points to spare over Monaghan champions, Castleblayney.

Ryan Gaffney scored 3-1 and Michael Mone 2-4 for the rampant winners who became the first Armagh club to win the Ulster IHC title since Keady were successful in 2007.

Mount Leinster Rangers had a closer call in their All-Ireland semi-final, beating Robert Emmets (London) by two points. Denis Murphy scored 0-7 for Rangers as they edged into the final.

It was the latest achievement for the Mount Leinster Ranger club who enjoyed a great 2011 as they added the Leinster intermediate title to the Carlow senior hurling crown. Now, they are one win away from an All-Ireland title, which would be a magnificent achievement for a club which was only founded in 1987.

A tough draw against Kilkenny intermediate champions, Danesfort, home club to Kilkenny stars, Richie Hogan and Paul Murphy presented Rangers with a huge test in the Leinster semi-final but they responded in style, winning by 1-10 to 1-8. A goal by Eddie Byrne in the 39th minute set Rangers on their way to a famous victory, setting up a final clash with Celbridge. John Coady scored 1-2 and Denis Murphy 0-5 against the Kildare champions as Rangers steered a steady course to a 1-13 to 0-13 success.

How they reached the final

Middletown 2-21 Eire Og Carrickmore (Tyrone) 1-11 (Ulster quarter-final)
Middletown 3-11 v Lamh Dhearg (Antrim) 2-9 (Ulster semi-final)
Middletown 5-17 Castleblayney (Monaghan) 0-5 (Ulster final)
Middletown 3-14 Effin (Limerick) 2-10 All-Ireland semi-final

Junior Hurling : Charleville (Cork) v St.Patrick’s (Kilkenny)

Seven of the last eight All-Ireland junior titles have gone to Cork and Kilkenny clubs and the pattern will continue next weekend as Charleville face up to St.Patrick’s, Ballyraggett.

Charleville swept into the final with a 14-point win over Fullen Gaels (Warwickshire) in the semi-final. James O’Brien scored 0-7 and Mark Kavanagh 1-1 for a rampant Charleville side, who also racked up three impressive wins in Munster.

They beat Cappamore by 3-15 to 2-8 in the Munster final, although the winning margin flattered them somewhat as Cappamore were only two point adrift midway through the second half before Charleville pressed on to run out ten point winners.

Top scorer, James O’Brien scored 1-5 for Charleville to add to the 1-8 he scored in the semi-final against Rockwell Rovers and the 1-6 he notched against Kenmare in the quarter-final.

St.Patrick’s were equally impressive in Leinster before beating Ballygar (Galway) by four points in the All-Ireland semi-final. Kevin Kelly scored 0-8 for St.Patrick’s, who did most of the damage in the first half when they opened up an eight point lead before withstanding a Ballygar revival.

Earlier, St.Patrick’s made it six in a row for Kilkenny clubs as they captured the Leinster title with relative ease, winning all three games by big margins. Carlow Town were the first to experience the awesome power of the Ballyragget outfit, losing by 17 points before the Kilkenny champions galloped past Brosna Gaels of Offaly by the same amount in the semi-final.

It set them up for a Leinster final clash with Ballyfin of Laois and the St.Patrick’s men delivered again, winning by 11 points. Kevin Kelly scored 0-9 and Joe Brennan 0-6 to keep St.Patrick’s in line to become the first Kilkenny club to win the All-Ireland junior title since Conahy Shamrocks were successful in 2008.

How they reached the final

Charleville 1-13 Kenmare (Kerry) 0-5 (Munster quarter-final)

Charleville 2-14 Rockwell Rovers (Tipperary) 0-8 (Munster semi-final)
Charleville 3-15 Cappamore (Limerick) 2-8 (Munster final)
Charleville 1-17 Fullen Gaels (Warwickshire) 0-6 (All-Ireland semi-final)

St. Patrick’s (Kilkenny) 2-17 Carlow Town 0-6 (Leinster quarter-final)
St. Patrick’s 2-18 Brosna Gaels (Offaly) 1-4 (Leinster semi-final)
