AIB Connacht GAA Football Senior Club Championship Final : Charlestown (Mayo) v Corofin (Galway), Charlestown 2.00.

Corofin moved into second place on the Connacht honours table behind Clan na nGael (Roscommon) when they won the title for the fourth time last year, having previously won it in 1991-95-97. Charlestown are bidding for their second title, having won their first in 2001 when they beat Galway champions, Annaghdown by two points in the final.

The Connacht title has gone to Galway and Mayo 13 times each so next Sunday’s winners will not only claim the crown but also push their county into the lead on the honours’ table.

Corofin will be trying to become the first Galway club to beat Mayo opposition in the Connacht final since Killererin beat Castlebar Mitchels in 1978. Since then it’s 3-0 to Mayo in final clashes with Galway opposition as Crossmolina beat Corofin in 2000, Charlestown by Annaghdown in 2001 and Ballina beat Killererin in 2004.

Paths to the Final

Charlestown 1-9 Castlerea (Roscommon) 0-11 (after extra-time)

It took 80 minutes to separate the sides with only the minimum between them at the end after they finished level (1-6 to 0-9) after an hour. Charlestown kicked three points in the first period of extra-time but Castlerea pared two back in the second period but couldn’t force the equaliser.

Captained by Aidan Higgins, Charlestown, who have Mayo star Tom Parsons at midfield and former star forward, John Casey in goal, are well primed for action as they attempt to bring the trophy back to Mayo for the 14th time.

Corofin 2-13 Glencar Manorhamilton (Leitrim) 0-9

The Leitrim champions led by 0-5 to 0-3 after 13 mins but Corofin won the remaining 47 minutes by 2-10 to 0-4 to keep their two-in-a-row ambitions very much alive. Captain, Kieran Comer scored 1-3 for a team that also features other Galway inter-county players in Damien and Alan Burke and Gary Sice. Corofin beat Eastern Harps (Sligo) in last year’s final.

Three clubs who have never previously won the Leinster title, plus the club with the highest number of titles - that’s the line-up for next Sunday’s semi-finals.

Portlaoise, who lead the way at the top of the honours’ table with six titles, will be at home to Offaly champions, Clara who last reached the final in 1991 where they lost to Thomas Davis (Dublin). Neither of the other semi-finalists, Garrycastle and Ballyboden St.Enda’s, have reached the final before.

Portlaoise powered into the semi-finals with easy wins over Mattock Rangers (Louth) and Seneschalstown (Meath), whom they beat by a combined total of 37 points. They beat Mattock by 2-21 to 0-2 and Seneschalstown by 3-12 to 1-6. Paul Cahillane has scored 3-3 and Barry Fitzgerald 1-9 in a lively attack while the defence, anchored by Laois star, Kevin Fitzpatrick at full-back has been extremely solid.

Portlaoise are bidding to reach the final for the first time since 2004 against a Clara side who have also recorded two wins so far. They staged a magnificent comeback to beat St.Laurence’s (Kildare) by a point (1-12 to 2-8) after being eight points behind at half-time.

They had to work extremely hard to beat Rathvilly in the quarter-final (0-14 to 1-8) in a game where Thomas Deehan scored 0-10 (0-5 from frees). Deehan scored 0-5 against St. Laurence’s so he’s very much one to watch as Clara attempt to reach the final for the first time in 18 years.

Can Garrycastle succeed where other Westmeath champions have failed over the years? No Westmeath club has ever won the Leinster senior title but Garrycastle are quietly confident that they can make the breakthrough this year. They showed real determination in the quarter-final when beating Clonguish (Longford) by 1-14 to 0-15 after extra-time. The Dolan brothers Dessie (1-5) and Gary (0-3) were very much to the fore against the Longford champions who had beaten Horeswood (Wexford) in the first round.

The Leinster title has gone to Dublin clubs (Kilmacud Crokes twice and St.Vincent’s once) in three of the last four years and now it’s the turn of Ballyboden St.Enda’s to attempt to retain it in the Capital. They beat Rathnew (Wicklow) by 1-10 to 1-7 in the quarter-final with dual star, Conal Keaney scoring 0-5.

Of the four semi-finalists, Kilmurry-Ibrickane are the only club to have won the Munster title which they achieved in 2004 when, ironically, they beat Stradbally by a point in replayed final. They also reached last year’s final but lost by a point to Dromcollogher-Broadford of Limerick. Stradbally, who beat The Nire by 2-5 to 0-9 in the Waterford final, will be having their first outing in this year’s campaign whereas Kilmurry-Ibrickane beat Dromcollogher-Broadford by 0-11 to 0-5 in the quarter-final.

Kerins O Rahillys are bidding to reach the final for the first time but must do so without county stars, Tommy Walsh and David Moran, both of whom have gone to Australia. They played a big part in O'Rahillys’ win over Clonakilty in the first round so their absence comes as a big blow to the Kerrymen who will be looking to Walsh’s brother, Barry John and Declan Quill to provide a real cutting edge up front.

Moyle Rovers, who got a bye to the semi-final, beat Aherlow by 3-6 to 1-11 in the Tipperary county final with former Tipp star, Declan Browne scoring 2-4. Moyle Rovers last reached the final in 1998 where they lost to Doonbeg (Clare).
